Resolution of Ties

The Board meeting in May of 1999 addressed some of the issues over ties and qualifying for medals.  From the minutes we have:

Qualification

Medals

There was some discussion about the need for the regional and championship pulls to have similar criteria for medals.

Motion: A dog must have two qualifying pulls in order to qualify for a regional medal.  (m/s/c)

Tied Medal Distributions & Breaking Ties

Tie Breaking Rules

Motion: That the following be added to the rules in Article VI, Section 3b: Ties that cannot be broken by the current tie breaking rules in the gold and silver place the following medal(s) would be eliminated unless there is a tie at the bronze level.  In this case, both competitors would receive a medal and be invited to the championships.   (m/s/c)

An example of this (but not limited to):
Tie at 1st place, 2 gold and 1 bronze
Tie at 2nd place, 1 gold and 2 slivers (no bronze)
Tie at 3rd place, 1 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronzes

In regular competition ties shall be broken by head to head competition.  All other ties will remain as ties.

Rule Changes

Motion: That in Article VI, Section 3 of the Standing Rules, the last sentence shall be deleted as follows:
If a tie exists, the dog's record in head to head competition shall be used, if the dogs did not meet, or the dogs remain tied. the results of the five previous pulls and so on.

Motion: That Article IX Section 1, delete the last line as follows:
That only the top three dogs in each class shall be given medals.  If a tie exists the dogs record in head to head competition shall be used.  If the dogs did not meet, or if the dogs remain tied, the results of the 5th pull shall be used and so on.

Note:

The standings listings are computed according to the above rules and have the following notations to highlight qualifying dogs and medallists.

Ties are listed in "tie-break" order; i.e., the winner of the tie is listed first.

Where a tie cannot be broken, the total score is listed in red. I don't have a mechanism yet to show unbroken ties.

To be earn a Medal and be invited to The Championships, you must place in the top three and have at least two successful (non-zero scoring) pulls.

Dogs qualifying have their total score back grounded by yellow. I don't have a mechanism yet to show qualifying invitees.

To qualify for a medal, you must place in the top three scores and have at least two successful (non-zero scoring) pull.

Qualifying dogs in the top three positions have the dog's name back grounded by the closest color to the medal: I don't have a mechanism yet to distinguish medallists.
Gold for 1st (alright, it's yellow)
Silver for 2nd
Bronze for 3rd (really more of a brown)
Two new similar issues have surfaced that will need The Board's attention.  The second seems pretty obvious.  The first could generate some differences of opinion.
  1. If one of the top three scorers does not have two qualifying pulls; do we skip him as if he was not there, or do we skip that medal?  I have elected to skip him as if he doesn't exist.
  2. If a tied medallist does not qualify, do we skip him and not call it a tie, or keep the tie but not give him a medal?  I have elected to skip him.

At the time of this writing (12 March 2000) we have none of these situations.
